Three strategy games
to tend like a slow-growing garden

A good fern takes seasons to unfurl, and so do the best strategy games. Each of these three free-to-play titles grows at its own pace: in the first you dig in behind walls and prepare sieges, in the second you steer an empire over a crowded world map, and in the third you lay out a city along the Nile. Your browser is all the equipment required, and registration is free.

Combat Siege key art
01 · Real-time siege strategy

Combat Siege

Run a military base on a live map where nothing waits for you to press end turn. Thicken the walls, place your defences and only then look outward, because a successful siege on a rival depends on preparation and on allies who strike at the same moment.

Good for
Careful defenders who enjoy preparing for a fight more than rushing into one.
Typical session
Short visits spread through the day

Your first session
  1. Pour early resources into walls and defensive buildings rather than an eager first raid.
  2. Upgrade the buildings that feed your troops, so training queues never run dry.
  3. Settle into an alliance whose members actually talk, and pick siege targets together.

Total Battle key art
02 · Tactical empire strategy

Total Battle

Start from a small settlement and shape it into an imperial capital, then march mixed armies over an enormous map you share with thousands of other rulers. Battles reward clever pairings of troop types over raw headcount, and a clan offers common objectives plus a helping hand with construction.

Good for
Strategists who like weighing unit match-ups and long-term growth together.
Typical session
A handful of check-ins a day

Your first session
  1. Level the central buildings of your capital before anything else, as they gate most upgrades.
  2. Field a varied army; one troop type alone is easy for opponents to counter.
  3. Look for a clan in your first days for construction help and protection on the map.

Anocris key art
03 · Ancient Egypt city strategy

Anocris

Found a settlement on the rich floodplain of the Nile and expand it district by district, keeping farms, craftsmen and traders in balance. The economy is the heart of the game, and armies and fresh territory only make sense once your storehouses are comfortably stocked.

Good for
Methodical builders who like an economy that rewards foresight.

How the free-to-play model works in these three

Creating an account is free in all three, and a player who never spends a cent can still enjoy months of progress; nothing essential is fenced off.

That said, every studio runs an in-game store for premium currency, cosmetic touches and timer skips. Many people never visit it, and on a family computer it is wise to switch on purchase limits inside the studio account.

Planting your first seeds

Clicking the button beneath a game brings up its official site in another tab. Register over there, often with only an email address, and within a minute you have a base, a capital or a riverside town to look after.

Each title opens with a guided introduction. Take the time to complete it on your first evening, since it walks you through resources, construction and cooperation step by step.

Making play fit a busy week

Nothing pauses when you leave. Upgrades finish, armies keep moving and production buildings fill up while the browser is shut, so one visit over breakfast and another after dinner keeps everything healthy.

Treat brief visits like watering: harvest resources, start the next upgrade and catch up with allies. Keep the leisurely sessions for the decisions that shape a whole season, such as a major siege, a new district or a fresh push for territory.

Guarding your login

Accounts live with the studio, so your password belongs only on the studio's own sign-in page. Keep the passwords different from game to game, and enable two-step verification if the studio provides it.

Nobody from a genuine support team needs your password, whether by email or in game chat. Someone trading make-believe treasure for your password wants to hijack the account.

Why these three found a place on the potting bench

  • Each opens in a regular desktop browser window, so there is no installer to fetch and run.
  • Every one can be enjoyed from start to finish at no charge, and any shop inside it is purely optional.
  • Bases, empires and cities carry on growing while you are elsewhere, which makes a two-minute visit worthwhile.
  • These are long-running titles with lively player communities and studios that still release fresh content.

Nothing at all. A standard desktop browser runs every one of them as it is.

Yes. Accounts cost nothing, the games can be played fully for free and in-game spending is a matter of choice.

We did not. Separate studios develop and run each title, and our buttons point straight to their official sign-up pages.

Sadly not. Each title has its own studio behind it, so each needs a separate sign-up.

Your timers and marching orders carry on regardless, so a morning and an evening visit is usually plenty.

Anocris, with its slow economic build-up on the Nile. Choose Combat Siege for defence and sieges, or Total Battle for tactical armies on a huge map.

Certainly. Friends can share an alliance in Combat Siege, a clan in Total Battle or a riverside alliance in Anocris.
